Cats termites win tourney

The Andrews termite boys basketball team finished the season at an undefeated 13-0. They went on to win the Smoky Mountain Conference tournament to complete the perfect season.

The team was presented a trophy and championship rings for winning the tournament. They are the second Andrews basketball team to go undefeated and win their conference championship, after the Andrews Middle School boys basketball team did so only a few weeks ago.

TRACK

Cotton runs indoor state

Corrine Cotton of Murphy competed in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A indoor track state championship Friday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.

She ran in the 500-meter run and came in 13th place with a time of 1:26.53. She was the only Smoky Mountain Conference athlete to compete in the 500m dash event.

Cotton qualified for the state meet following her second-place finish at the Last Chance Polar meet in Swain County on Feb. 5.

BASKETBALL

Lady Dogs finish 9-1

The Murphy Lady Bulldogs junior varsity basketball team finished the regular season 9-1 against their Smoky Mountain Conference opponents.

With their conference-best record in the regular season, they secured the top spot in the tournament.

After receiving a first-round bye, the Lady Dogs will play the winner of Robbinsville vs. Cherokee, who play at 6:30 p.m. today at the host school, Hayesville.

SOCCER

CCSL looks for coaches

The Cherokee County Soccer League is seeking coaches for the upcoming season.

They are looking for coaches for one more 8U coach in both Andrews and Murphy, one 10U Murphy coach and one to two more 15U coaches in Andrews. They also have room for a few more players in the 6U, 8U, 15U and 18U age groups.

Pre-seeding playoff update

Seeding for the upcoming N.C. High School Athletic Association varsity basketball playoffs is Sunday. Before the official brackets are released, here is where the teams stand according to the rankings on the NCHSAA website at press time.

In 1A West boys, Andrews is the highest-ranked Cherokee County team at No. 12. Murphy is just behind at No. 14, while Hiwassee Dam sits at No. 33.

On the girls side for 1A West, Hiwassee Dam is in the top 10 at No. 9, Andrews is No. 20 and Murphy is No. 31.

These are not the final rankings and they will get shaken up based on the results of the Big and Little Smoky Mountain Conference tournaments, which are set to conclude Thursday.

FOOTBALL

N.C. in the Super Bowl

Three North Carolinians were crowned Super Bowl champions on Feb. 9. Five total players from the Tar Heel State played in the big game.

Jordan Davis, Landon Dickerson and Will Shipley, who went to high school in North Carolina, play for the Philadelphia Eagles. Davis went to Mallard Creek (4A), Dickerson went to South Caldwell (4A) and Shipley went to Weddington (4A).

Kansas City Chiefs players D.J. Humphries and Joshua Williams are also from N.C. Humphries also attended Mallard Creek, and Williams went to Jack Britt (4A) in Fayetteville.

Mallard Creek in Charlotte is one of five high schools with multiple players in Super Bowl 59.
