4 basketball games canceled due to winter weather in area
Hiwassee Dam was scheduled to host Andrews on Friday, but the game was canceled due to a winter weather storm in western North Carolina.
The game will now be played Thursday. The girls will tip off at 6 p.m., while the boys will start about 7:30 p.m.
Murphy was also scheduled to travel to Gilmer County, Ga., on Saturday, but the game was canceled due to the weather. There is no reschedule date as of press time.
TRACK
First track meet of 2025 called off due to snowfall
Last week’s indoor track meet was canceled due to a winter weather storm. The meet was scheduled to take place at Swain County.
Instead, Smoky Mountain Conference indoor track teams will travel to Cherokee today for their first meet of 2025. This will be their first meet since Dec. 4 at Swain County.
Today’s meet will start at 3:30 p.m. in Cherokee.

Andrews Middle School boys basketball goes undefeated
The Andrews Middle School boys basketball team ended their regular season with a win over Murphy Middle School on Thursday to finish the season undefeated.
The middle school Wildcats defeated the Dogs 54-37 to end their regular season undefeated and secure a spot in the conference championship.

Next gun club meeting set to have interesting guest speak
The Mountain Country Rod & Gun Club’s next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 21, at their new meeting place of Choices Pregnancy & Parenting Center, 1262 Andrews Road in Murphy.
This month’s meeting will feature Dr. Johnny L. Morris, who served as a U.S. Naval aviator fighter pilot in North Vietnam. He will discuss his time during his full tour of combat duty in North Vietnam flying F-4 J Phantom II aircraft from aircraft carriers.
