Indoor track goes to Swain
The Andrews indoor track team, as well as fellow Smoky Mountain Conference teams headed to Swain County to compete in the #BeAPayne Polar Invitational meet.
The highest finisher on the Wildcats on Dec. 4 was William Wood, who came in fourth place in the shot put. Braydon Bohanon and Logan Patrick also competed in the shot put, with Bohanon finishing 11th and Logan Patrick in 14th.
In high jump, Electa Ledford came in sixth place with a jump of 4-foot-4. In the long jump, AJ Johnson came in seventh place. In the 55-meter dash, Isaac Patrick came in ninth, while Johnson came in 22nd.
Other teams from the conference included Cherokee, Robbinsville and Swain County. Other teams that competed included Christ School from Arden, Enka High School, Franklin, Pisgah, Smoky Mountain, Tuscola and Shining Rock Classical Academy.
The meet was named after late Swain County track and cross-country coach Keith Payne.
The indoor track teams will head to Cherokee for their next meet to kick off the new year. SMC indoor teams will head to Cherokee on Jan. 15, 2025.

NCHSAA holds meet
The N.C. High School Athletic Association’s Board of Directors held their winter meets, which concluded Thursday.

The board tables two discussions, the first being on a proposal to create separate classifications for charter and non-boarding parochial schools. The second was a discussion to sanction women’s flag football. Both have been held off until a future date.
Three policy items were approved.
- The first of requiring a minimum of three calendar days between football contests.
- The second was an amendment to the ejection policy so student-athletes may remain in the team area for supervision after a disqualification or ejection, which is effective immediately.
- The third is a modification to the master eligibility sheet to only list names of certified coaches, which will be effective starting the 2025-26 school year.
In boys golf, four team members can score as a team in regionals if they qualified to regionals as individuals. In soccer, yellow and red cards will be tracked through DragonFly effective the spring 2025 season. In wrestling, they removed the five stoppages before disqualification during blood time, which is effective Jan. 1.
FRANKLIN
Cherokee Co. swim results
The swim team from Cherokee County headed back to Franklin for their second meet of the season.
From Tri-County Early College, Mary Lynn Hulsey, Fern Crayton, Sophia Evans and Tina Trigueros got second place in the 200-meter medley relay. Iris Diaz-Menchu, Tori Jimenez, Jenni Ramiver-Jaime and Trigueros came in fourth in the 200m freestyle relay. The 400m freestyle relay of Hulsey, Jimenez, Evans and Crayton came in second.
Crayton came in second in the 300m freestyle and first in the 100m breastroke. Evans came in second in both the 200m individual medley and 500m freestyle.
On the boys side, the 200m freestyle relay of William Boyd, Elias Diaz-Menchu, Nathan Downs and Mason Gaither came in third place. The 400m freestyle relay of Boyd, Downs, Nathan Abejam and Griffin Criteau-Schreiner finished third.
Criteau-Schreiner came in third in the 200m IM.
Jack Dockery, the only swimmer from Murphy High School, came in seventh in the 100m freestyle.
TOPTON
Hawks fall to Knights
The Nantahala Hawks fell to the Robbinsville Black Knights for their second loss of the season.
The Hawks lost 86-35 on Thursday. This was their first loss since falling to Copper Basin, Tenn. on Nov. 19.
The Hawks will host Blue Ridge Early College at
6 p.m. Friday for their first Little Smoky Mountain Conference game of the season.
PEACHTREE
ACWF is in action
On Saturday, Dec. 14, the American Championship Wrestling Federation will be back in action at the Peachtree Community Center, 125 Memory Lane.
ACWF superstars in action will include the Men of Honor (Frodo, Stryker and Mountain Man Jeremy Stiles), the American Outlaws (Axel Gunn and Killshot), Flex Ferguson, Digger James, Robert Starr, The Freak, MD King, Billy Havoc, Mr. Atlanta 2, Mike Clay and Rodney Haze.
Also featured will be The Jesus Freak and Royce Steel.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for ages 6-12, and free for ages 5 and under.
