McClure on to regionals

Ellie McClure represented Murphy High School at the 1A/2A West Regional girls golf tournament held at Lincoln Country Club on Oct. 22.

McClure shot 104 to finish in 38th out of the 81 golfers competing. She shot 45 on the front nine, then made the turn and shot 59 to round out her 104.

Her score was not enough to qualify for state, so her successful season concluded at the regional tournament. The regional tournament also had girls golfers from the Smoky Mountain Conference as well as the Catawba Shores Athletic 1A/2A, Catawba Valley Athletic 2A, Metro 8 1A, Mountain Foothills 7 1A/2A, Southern Piedmont 1A/2A and Western Highlands 1A/2A conferences.

Playoffs this week

The playoffs for local teams kick off this week with boys soccer, followed by football playoffs starting next Friday, Nov. 15. Volleyball playoffs wrapped up for local teams two weeks ago.

Seeding for the boys soccer 1A state tournament is Thursday, then the first round will be played on Saturday. At press time, Murphy High School is the only local team projected to make the playoffs, according to N.C. High School Athletic Association rankings powered by MaxPreps.

Seeding for the football 1A state playoffs is on Sunday and the first round will be played Friday, Nov. 15. At press time, Murphy and Andrews are projected to make the playoffs.

Winter sports starting soon

With fall sports winding down, winter sports teams are getting ready to step into the spotlight. Basketball, indoor track and wrestling have all begun practicing.

The first official day a basketball team can have a game is Friday, Nov. 15, or Monday for school without a football team.

The first official day a wrestling team can have a meet is Monday, Nov. 11.

The first day a team can go to an indoor track meet is also Nov. 11.

HIAWASSEE, Ga.

Wrestling kicks off

The Andrews (N.C.) Middle School wrestling season kicked off Saturday, as the Wildcats headed to Towns County for the King of the Mountains tournament.

Chris Jackson went 3-0 on the day with all three wins via pin. Isaiah Roehm went 2-0 with both wins by pin. Sissy Ashe went 2-0 with both wins by pin. Jackson, Roehm and Ashe got first place in their weight class.

Mac Wallace went 1-1 with both results by pin. Zayden Wallace went 1-2, with his win being on points and both losses via pin. Bransen Bowers went 0-4 at the tournament, Mac Wallace got second in his weight class and Zayden Wallace got third.

Towns County Middle, Rabun County Middle, Union County Middle and Fannin County Middle schools also competed at the tournament.
