NORTH CAROLINA

NIL in high schools

High school athletes in North Carolina can profit off of their name, image and likeness, per a ruling by Wake County Superior Court Judge Graham Shirley.

The State Board of Education is required to adopt the NIL rules after an order, which went into effect Oct. 14 after Judge Shirley reversed the state’s NIL ban on Oct. 1.

Some of the proposed rules that the board sent to public comment will have to be applied to all public schools in the state, including as schools apart of the N.C. High School Athletic Association, which includes four private schools.

There will also be certain restriction as to who can have NIL deals with students, including casinos, alcohol products, tobacco and nicotine products, weapons or gambling.

Students must get their NIL agreement approved by the local superintendent, as well as consent from a parent or legal guardian. They must also take a course on NIL education.
