Tourney for Oxton

A benefit fishing tournament for Colby Oxton will be held from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Ledford Chapel Boat Ramp on Lake Chatuge.

There is a $100 entry fee per boat and $10 for the big fish pot. It is also $5 for hot dog or hamburger plates after the weigh-in.

There is a five-fish limit with a 14-inch minimum. Everyone is encouraged to come fellowship after the weigh-in even if you don’t fish.

Trout water regulations

As of Oct. 1, Delayed Harvest Trout Waters regulations on 34 trout waters across the state, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission announced last month.

Under Delayed Harvest Trout Waters regulations, no trout may be harvested or possessed from identified waters between Oct. 1 and one half-hour after sunset on June 6, 2025.

No natural bait may be used, and anglers can only fish with artificial lures with one single hook. An artificial lure is defined as a fishing lure that neither contains nor has been treated with any substance that attracts fish by the sense of taste or smell, the Wildlife Resources Commission says.

There are no Delayed Harvest Trout Waters in Cherokee County. Fires Creek in Clay County, the Nantahala River – from Whiteoak Creek to Nantahala hydropower discharge canal – in Macon County and (Big) Snowbird Creek – from the U.S. Forest Service footbridge at the old railroad junction to USFS Road 2579 – in Graham County are under Delayed Harvest Trout Waters regulations.

Gun club plans class

The Chatuge Gun Club is presenting a course titled “Basic Pistol,” a 12-hour course demonstrating fundamental handling of handguns and the legal ownership, storage and use of firearms.

The course is a basic handgun course enhanced by emphasis on self-defense and the law, so it is suitable for experienced as well as novice shooters.

There will be an eight-hour classroom portion, as well as supervised live firing at their firing range. Participants should provide a suitable handgun and 100 rounds of appropriate ammunition.

The course fee is $40, which covers classroom materials, texts, snacks, Saturday lunch, targets, etc. Pre-registration is required, and the class capacity is 30.

12 N.C. Olympians

A total of 12 current and former North Carolina college and university athletes won medals at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

Athletes Crystal Dunn, Emily Fox and Lindsay Horan of UNC Chapel Hill won gold. Chelsea Gray and Jayson Tatum of Duke University won gold. Steph Curry of Davidson and Ryan Held of N.C. State also won gold.

Evy Leibfarth of Bryson City, who is attending Davidson won bronze. Katherine Berkoff of N.C. State, Dearica Hamby of Wake Forest and Naya Tapper of UNC Chapel Hill also won bronze. Kristen Siermachesky of UNC Chapel Hill won silver for Team Canada in rowing 8’s.
