Girls high school golf teams tee off
The high school girls golf teams have started the season and Murphy and Tri-County Early College have had success through the first four matches.
Murphy freshman Ellie McClure finished in first place as an individual in their first match on Aug. 29 at Chatuge Shores in Hayesville. She also finished in fourth at their second match and in third at their third match of the season.
McClure won the match by shooting her all-time best score of 48 on Sept. 17 at Chatuge Shores. Tri-County’s Ruby Kuykendall shot 60 and Madison Deren shot 63.
Their next match is the first round of the Smoky Mountain Conference girls golf conference tournament at Smoky Mountain Country Club in Whittier on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 3:30 p.m.

Youth basketball signups Saturday
Sign ups for Murphy Youth Basketball will continue Saturday and next week at the Rock Gym in Konehete Veterans Park.
In-person signups are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. The basketball league is for grades 1-6 and cost $50 per child, but only $25 for per each additional sibling.
Bring a copy of the child’s physical and birth certificate. No late signups will be accepted. Teams with more than 15 players may be subject to tryouts at the coaches discretion.

3 county high schools earn honors from state
The N.C. High School Athletic Association gave three Cherokee County high schools honors for the 2023-24 school year, the Cherokee County Board of Education announced at its monthly meeting Thursday.
Hiwassee Dam High School received an honor for five years without an ejection from a game.
Murphy and Tri-County Early College high schools each received an honor for no ejections during the 2023-24 school year.

Rotary to host golf tournament
The Rotary Club of Murphy will be hosting its 2024 Rotary Tournament for Champions golf tournament at Mountain Harbour Golf Club on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
The format is four-person select shot, with tee-off set at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $500 per team.
There will be prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive and a hole-in-one prize of $15,000. There are senior tees for ages 65-plus and women’s tees. The cash payouts will be $650 for first, $400 for second and $250 for third.
A full 100% of the profits will be used to provide $1,000 scholarships to at least one graduating senior from each area high school in Cherokee County.

Pink games in volleyball
Cherokee County high school volleyball teams will host Pink Night to raise awareness for breast cancer.
Andrews will host their Pink Game on Thursday, Oct. 3, when they host Murphy. They are hosting a raffle to benefit Kay Jackson.
Raffle tickets are $10. The total prize value of the raffle is $1,625 and includes prizes from more than 20 local businesses. Raffle tickets can be purchased at Andrews volleyball games.
Hiwassee Dam’s Pink Game will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, when they take on Highlands at 6 p.m.
Murphy will host its Pink Game on Tuesday, Oct. 8, against Cherokee. They will be raising money from breast cancer research and purchasing of equipment.
