Dogs facing familiar foe
The Murphy boys soccer team hit the road last week and played Summit Charter on Sept. 3, then returned home to play Swain County on Tuesday.
They lost 2-1 to Summit Charter on Sept. 4. Murphy’s Jaden Rice scored their goal in the first half of the match. It was Rice’s second goal of the season.
On Monday, they lost at home to Swain 1-0.
Their next match is today on the road against Cherokee at 5:30 p.m.
MURPHY
JV football 4-0 on year
The Murphy junior varsity football team is 4-0 on the season after a win against Hayesville 40-0 on Thursday night.
The Andrews JV football team is 0-2 after their 42-14 loss against Swain County on Thursday night. They lost their first game of the season on Aug. 29 against Madison 18-14.
This Thursday night, the JV Bulldogs will host Robbinsville at 6 p.m., while Andrews JV will host Cherokee at the same time.

Pickleball tournament
Four Square Community Action is sponsoring the Pickleball Tournament Fundraiser on Saturday. The tournament is in Hayesville at 8:30 a.m. and in Murphy at 5 p.m.
The event supports Four Square’s programs, which provides housing, early childhood education, food support, and addresses health and safety needs of low-income individuals and families in Cherokee, Clay, Graham and Swain counties.

Paralympic 8 from state
There are eight athletes from North Carolina representing Team U.S.A. in the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympic Games.
At the Games, which wrapped up Sunday, five athletes from the Tar Heel State earned medals. Morgan Stickney of Cary won gold in the 400-meter freestyle swim, Heather Erickson of Fayetteville and Emma Schieck of Statesville on the sitting volleyball team won gold, Carson Clough of Charlotte won silver in the PTS4 paratriathlon and Maria Liana Mutia of Raleigh won silver in para judo.
Representing Team U.S.A. were also Conner Stroud of Rutherfordton in wheelchair tennis, Desmond Jackson of Durham in long jump and Hannah Aspden of Raleigh in para swimming.
Overall, Team U.S.A. earned 36 gold medals, 42 silver and 27 bronze medals for a total of 105 medals in the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

August betting numbers
The North Carolina State Lottery Commission released the sports betting revenue for Aug. on Monday.
Between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31, $370,484,774 was wagered on sports events by account holders in North Carolina. $333,707,885 was won on bets by those account holders.
The state’s gross wagering revenue was $33,751,015. After the 18% tax rate is applied, the estimated tax proceeds for August would be $6,075,183.
