Soccer team falls to Madison

The Murphy boys soccer team started the season on the road against non-conference opponent Madison, which had three first-half goals and went on to win the match 3-0.

The Bulldogs will play twice on the road this week, as they take on Pisgah today and Smoky Mountain on Thursday. Murphy’s first home game will be at 6 p.m. Monday, when the Dogs host Summit Charter.

Volleyball begins year

The Lady Bulldogs kicked off their 2024 season with a loss to Franklin on Aug. 15. Murphy hit the road to start their season where they lost 3-0.

Their next game is at home Thursday, when they will host fellow Cherokee County team Hiwassee Dam at 5 p.m. After that they head to Robbinsville to take on the Lady Black Knight on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for their first conference game of the season.

Lady Eagles start season

The Hiwassee Dam volleyball team started the season with a series of non-conference games.

On Aug. 12, they fell to Hayesville on the road. Then they faced Banks County, Ga., and Fannin County, Ga., on Aug. 13, losing both games.

The match originally scheduled for Aug. 15 against Swain County was postponed due to a power outage in the area. The rescheduled date is still to be determined.

Their next match is Thursday, when they head to Murphy to take on the Lady Bulldogs. On Tuesday, they have their first conference game on the road at Highlands.

Gee endsat century

Robert Gee, whose grandparents George and Trish Postell live in Andrews, wrapped up his rookie season on the Bassmaster Elite series over the weekend with a second-place finish, cracking the century mark.

Professional angler Gee finished the tournament with a final total weight of 100 pounds, 7 ounces, which was less than 2 pounds from the winner’s weight.

He finished No. 5 in the Rookie of the Year standings and No. 13 in the Angler of the Year standings during his first season in the series.
