Hensley wins media award

Kevin Hensley, former sports editor of the Cherokee Scout and current publisher/editor of The Graham Star, was recognized with the 2024 Time Stevens Media Representative of the Year award on June 12.

Hensley was presented a plaque during the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s year-end award ceremony at Greensboro Coliseum.

“Ensuring that our local athletes receive the coverage they deserve has always been one of the passions of my career,” Hensley said. “I have been fortunate to have been a reporter in the competitive Smoky Mountain Conference for eight years, where championship traditions go hand in hand with talented young men and women...

“I am blessed to be an honorary Robbinsville Black Knight.”

Hensley was sports editor for the Scout from July 2016 to August 2019, when he was promoted to editor of The Graham Star. In early 2020, the title of publisher was added on.

MURPHY

Fitting for youth day

Murphy youth football will be finishing signups and fitting players for the upcoming season from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Lowes Field. Players will be sized to make sure they have proper fitting gear and uniform.

If your child is playing Murphy youth football, please bring a copy of their birth certificate, current physical and the $75 registration fee. Equipment and uniform will not be issued without paying the registration fee.

A lot of information about the season will be shared, including the schedule for the first few weeks. Conditioning will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, July 8.

CCSL camp coming up

The Cherokee County Soccer League will host a summer soccer camp from July 29 to Aug. 1 at Heritage Park.

The soccer camp will be from 10 a.m. to noon each day. The camp is for ages 4-18 and is $60 per person.

Register online by June 30 to receive a CCSL T-shirt at camp. Proceeds from registration will go toward new goals and nets for both the Andrews and Murphy soccer fields they use.

Over the four days, campers will learn control, competition, speed and leadership, among other soccer skills.

Promoting safe boating

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will participate in Operation Dry Water in efforts to promote safer boating during the Fourth of July holiday, one of the biggest days for boating.

NCWRC will be on high alert July 4-6.
