Andrews – The forecast was iffy, but the weather turned out great for the Cherokee/Clay County Senior Games Opening Day at Andrews Recreation Park.
A total of 55 senior competitors showed up for the opening six events along with family, friends, volunteers, sponsors and dignitaries. Anyone can still register for the Senior Games, which continues every day until Friday, May 20.
If you are ages 50 or higher and a resident of Cherokee, Clay or Graham counties, you can register right up until game time. The events completed last week included the 5K road race, horseshoes, bowling doubles and three days of pickleball – and the games are not even halfway through.
Be sure to stop by the Murphy Art Center downtown and have a look at the beautiful works of art of SilverArtists. There are more than 100 pieces of arts and crafts in 30 different disciplines competing for the medals.
The SilverArts Showcase will be available for public viewing until Thursday, May 19. This year, there are a total of 53 artists, with 13 showing their artwork for the first time.
The more than 100 attendees included Andrews Mayor James Reid, Murphy Mayor Tim Radford, and Cherokee County commissioners Randy Phillips and Cal Stiles. Representing the sponsors were Craig Taylor with Humana, Linda May with Modern Woodmen of America, Phillip “Peewee” Davis, director of the Cherokee County Recreation Department, and Denise Cross, director of Cherokee County Senior Services.
