Curtis to step in for Laney after seven years, going to spend time with family
Murphy – Murphy High School athletic director Joseph Watson announced Tuesday that Erik Laney will be stepping down as head coach of the Bulldogs’ basketball team and will be replaced by Heath Curtis.
Laney coached the Dogs for the last seven years, taking them to the third round of the state 1A playoffs last year.
“I am so grateful to have been able to lead the program since 2017. I have been very blessed to be able to work with such great players that have grown into outstanding men,” Laney said in a statement. “I hope my decision to step away from the basketball sideline will allow me more time to spend with my family.”

Laney will continue to coach football and softball for the Bulldogs.
“The decision for Heath Curtis to take the job as head basketball coach is extremely exciting. Coach Curtis worked in the program as my assistant coach and head JV boys coach for several years,” Laney said.
“He is an excellent coach whose passion and intensity is second to none. He will be a great role model for these young men. I can’t wait to see the successes of this team under his leadership.”
“I’m excited for the opportunity to serve as head basketball coach for Murphy High School. Coach Laney had a big impact on me as a coach and as a friend, and I’m thankful for all that he has done and continues to do for this program,” Curtis said.
“Looking forward to build on the foundation that has been laid and most importantly, we’re looking forward to having a positive impact on the young men at Murphy High School.”
Curtis will inherit a team that lost several of its starters to graduation, but has a talented sophomore class coming in. He plans to meet with the team today.
The Bulldogs ended last season with a trip to the playoffs and 18-10 record.
