Asheville – Murphy High School cleaned up at the 59 annual WNC Sports Banquet, which took place Aug. 15 at the Omni Grove Park Inn.
Achievements from both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school year were recognized, as the event did not take place last year. Rising senior Torin Rogers was named the top Division II female athlete from a major sport, while recent alumna Sarah Pullium was named the top Division II female athlete from an Olympic sport. Both helped Murphy girls basketball win the 2021 1A state championship, while Pullium was also a three-time track and field state champion in the discus.
The girls basketball team also won the award for top Division II female team. Pullium, Rogers and the Lady Bulldogs all won the same awards that would have been given out at the 2020 banquet.
On the boys side, Murphy football was named the top Division II male team, while recent alum and University of Florida freshman Yousef Mugharbil was named the top Division II male athlete. The Bulldogs won their 10th football state championship in May.
Besides athletic awards, recent alumna Grace Nelson was also one of 17 student-athletes awarded a $1,500 scholarship through the John and Darlene McNabb Charitable Foundation.
