Murphy –  The Murphy Lady Bulldogs closed out the season with a 3-0 sweep of the Andrews Lady Wildcats, claiming a share of the Smoky Mountain Conference Title for the third consecutive season and finishing with an impressive 20-2 record.
“It says a lot for your seniors,” Murphy coach Nikol Edwards said of winning a share of the conference title for the third year in a row.
“They’ve been on every one of those teams, whether from the beginning or through their sophomore year. There’s a tradition here, it’s not just football. When you’re Murphy, everyone is coming after you because you have won. And that’s the tradition we want to keep and that’s what they’re working for.”
After the regular season finale, which happened to be the Lady Dogs’ senior night, Murphy’s seniors all shared the same thoughts.
The real season has begun, the post season.
“The mentality heading in (to the post season) is you never know what you’re going to see,” senior Hailey Bowman said. “You just got to play your game 100 percent no matter who you’re playing, no matter what the stats say.”
“Get in there, get it done and be conference champs,” senior Trinity Garrett said of the team’s mentality going into the tournament.
With the regular season wrapped up, the Lady Dogs now look to take home the SMC Tournament crown, which could end with a rematch against the Robbinsville Lady Knights, who Murphy split the SMC title with this season.
“We have a special group, we all bond with each other,” Bowman said of the Dogs’ team this year. “We’re the definition of a family and so it’s great that I know when I leave that these girls will be here to continue the program and we’ll be good.”
