Cary – Murphy High School graduate Chloe Decker, rising junior Catalina Barreiro and rising sophomore Lailee Hollaway were selected to participate in the BodyArmor State Games at WakeMedPark on Saturday and Sunday.
All three played on the West Region team, which came together from tryouts on May 1 and May 22 at Swain County Recreation Park in Bryson City. The high school competitions are usually for rising sophomores, juniors and seniors, but with last year’s event being cancelled, recent graduates from the Class of 2021 were allowed to participate this year.
Barreiro, Decker and Holloway all were strong contributors on a team that finished the 2021 season 7-4-1 and tied for second in the Smoky Mountain Conference. All three were named All-Conference and to the N.C. Region 10 Class 1A All-Region team. Holloway was the team’s top goal scorer and striker, Barreiro was the team’s top defender, while Decker was the top midfielder and team captain.
According to the event’s website, the BodyArmor State Games features more than 12,000 and 600 teams competing in 30 different sports. The competitions started June 5 with youth baseball, shooting, sand volleyball and track on field, then will end with youth and high school basketball July 18.
