Greensboro – Cherokee County had three varsity wrestlers competing in the state tournament in Greensboro on Friday and Saturday.
Weston Adams and Anthony Catuto from Murphy High School and Hayden Virtanen from Andrews High School competed in the tournament.
Adams competed in the 106-pound weight class and had three matches in the tournament.
His started with a pinfall loss to Eliel Lopez of Rosewood High School in the quarterfinals.
He then got a win in the first round of the consolation bracket.
His tournament came to an end when he lost by pinfall to Wyatt Tilley of South Stokes High School.
Catuto competed in the 165-pound weight class and also had three matches in the state tournament.
He started with a pinfall win in the quarterfinals over Malachi Daniels of Manteo High School.
In the semifinals, Catuto lost by a 11-5 decision to Alexis Nuevo of Alleghany.
Once in the consolation bracket, he lost by a 10-5 decision in the consolation semifinals to Jean-Marie Murry of Central Carolina Academy.
Virtanen represented Andrews in the wrestling state tournament.
He wrestled two matches where he lost by pinfall in both for his season to come to an end.
With the conclusion of the state tournament, varsity wrestling season has ended and athletes will shift their focus to spring sports or preparing for next season.
