Local seniors earn more medals at state games

Cherokee, Clay county athletes compete at the capital

Raleigh – Local Cherokee and Clay county athletes wrapped up their events at the Senior Games State Finals in late September. Local residents traveled to compete in various events, as well as the SilverArts competition.

A total of 31 local competitors competed in 87 events. They earned 44 total medals with 13 golds, 21 silver and 10 bronze medals earned.

The last round of events that were held included cornhole, bocce ball, shuffleboard, mini golf and a two-day golf tournament at Tanglewood Golf Club in Clemmons.

Rounding out the final wave of local athletes were Michele Preisser, Gary Preisser and Bart Harrison.

Michele Preisser earned the bronze medal in mini golf. Gary Preisser and Harrison also medaled in mini golf earning the silver and bronze, respectively.

Gary Preisser also brought home the gold medal in bocce ball.

Terence Faries, local organizer of the Cherokee & Clay County Senior Games, said congratulations to the 2025 local participants in the state finals. He is looking forward to 2026 and the upcoming events that they will host.
