The Andrews and Hiwassee Dam varsity volleyball teams kicked off the season by hitting the road.
Andrews traveled to Cashiers to play Summit Charter and won 3-0. Hiwassee Dam traveled to Swain County to take on the Maroon Devils and lost 3-0 in a close game.
Andrews
The Wildcats (1-1) came home victorious in their first match of the year. Andrews took on Summit Charter (0-2) in a three-set game where the Cats battled to the win in a battle of Big Smoky vs. Little Smoky Mountain Conference.
The Lady Wildcats took an early lead in the match by winning the first set 25-20. In the second set, the closest of the match, Andrews won 25-22 to lead 2-0.
Andrews dominated the third set to cruise to victory with their 25-10 third set win to take the match 3-0.
The Lady Wildcats will host Highlands at 6 p.m. Thursday in their next match. Highlands has been off to a rocky start, losing to Smoky Mountain and Hayesville on the road.
They will then travel to Rosman on Tuesday, Aug. 26. Rosman notched its first win against Summit Charter after falling to Murphy in the season opener.
Hiwassee Dam
The Lady Eagles (0-2) started their season on the road, where they fell to Swain County (1-1) in a close battle.
Hiwassee Dam jumped out to an early lead by winning the first set 25-21. They followed it up by winning the second set 25-22 to get one set win away from winning the match.
However, Swain battled back to win the third set 25-13, then did it again in the fourth set to win 25-9. Swain won two consecutive sets to tie the match 2-2, forcing a fifth set.
It was a close battle, but Swain took the fifth set 15-10 to win the match.
On Monday night, the Lady Eagles took on Murphy in the county seat.
The Lady Eagles will head to Clay County for their next match against Hayesville at. 6 p.m. Thursday. Hayesville has started the season 2-1 with wins over Highlands and Smoky Mountain and a loss to Franklin.
For the Lady Eagles’ next match, they will cross state lines and take on Copper Basin, Tenn., at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
