Andrews receives 1st-round bye in state 1A playoffs

Hayesville – The Andrews varsity volleyball team’s lone match last week was in the first round of the Smoky Mountain Conference tournament.

The first round of the 1A state playoffs was Saturday, but the Wildcats were not in action after receiving a first-round bye.

In the first round of the SMC tournament, the Lady Wildcats faced Robbinsville, which Andrews was 0-2 against so far this season. Both teams traveled to the host school Hayesville on Oct. 13 for the first round of the conference tournament.

Robbinsville took an early lead in the match and won the first set to lead 1-0 in the match. They then won the second set to move one set away from advancing in the tournament.

The Lady Black Knights closed out the match in the third set to win the match 3-0.

Robbinsville advanced to play Cherokee in the second round, where the Lady Knights lost 3-0.

Playoff seeding was held Thursday, and Andrews got the No. 8 seed in 1A West and earned a first-round bye.

In their second-round matchup, the Lady Wildcats faced NCSSM: Morganton after the Cherokee Scout’s press deadline Tuesday morning. Coverage of the match will be in the Oct. 29 edition of the Scout.

NCSSM: Morganton is the No. 9 seed and faced Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy in the first round. NCSSM: Morganton won the match 3-0 to advance to face the Wildcats.
