Lady Eagles win, boys fall to Robbinsville at home

Hiwassee Dam – The Eagles varsity basketball teams kicked off their week by hosting Robbinsville.

During their first of two games last week against competition from the Big Smoky Mountain Conference, the Lady Eagles emerged victorious against the Lady Black Knight, while the boys fell for their second loss this season.

Lady Eagles win

Coming off of their conference loss to Highlands last week, the Hiwassee Dam girls basketball team got back in the win column with a win over Robbinsville.

With the win, the Lady Eagles have won four straight against Big Smoky Mountain Conference competition so far this season, with the win over Robbinsville being the second one by more than 10 points.

The Lady Eagles started their week by defeating Robbinsville 64-50 on Dec. 16.

Hiwassee Dam got out to an early lead after 14 points in the first quarter while the Lady Black Knights scored nine. The Lady Eagles followed it up with 16 points in the second quarter to lead 30-19 at halftime.

Coming out of the half, the Lady Eagles kept the ball rolling with 19 points in the third quarter to lead 49-32 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Robbinsville cut into the Lady Eagles’ lead by out scoring the Lady Eagles 18-13 in the final frame. Despite being outscored in the fourth, the Lady Eagles had built a large lead and held on to win 64-50 for their fourth straight win against Big Smoky competition.

Two Lady Eagles put up big numbers against Robbinsville. Brooklyn Hyde led the team with 28 points. Olivia McNabb had 20 points, with 12 of those coming on free throws.

Brinkley Payne had seven points, with four of those coming in the fourth quarter. She was also 3/4 on free throws. Abby Harris had six points on two three-point shots.

Boys varsity loses

The Eagles fell to Robbinsville to start their week. On Monday, they had their second loss to Big Smoky Mountain Conference competition. The loss also snaps their four-game win streak.

Robbinsville took a slim lead early and maintained it for the rest of game. The Eagles had their highest scoring quarter in the first, but Robbinsville outscored them to take a 19-17 lead through the first period.

The Eagles outscored the Black Knights in the second quarter, but Robbinsville took a one lead to halftime.

Coming out of the half, Robbinsville explode for 24 points in the third quarter to extend their lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Knights held the Eagles to seven points and tacked on 21 of their own to close out their 79-51 win.

Two Eagles had double digit points as Braiden Ledford had 12 points and Luke Harbin had 11. Aidan Bennett also had nine points against the Knights.

Upon their return from winter break, Hiwassee Dam will have a rematch with Swain County on the road Friday, Jan. 3, 2025.

The girls game starts at 6:30 p.m., while the boys start at 8 p.m.
