Lady Eagles sweep Cats

In each team’s final series of the regular season, Andrews and Hiwassee Dam’s softball teams faced off.

The Lady Eagles came away with two wins, as the in-county rivals wrapped up the regular season. In their two wins, the Lady Eagles combined for 25 runs.

The series started in Hiwassee Dam on April 29, where the Lady Eagles won 15-0 in a no-hitter.

Senior Olivia McNabb got the scoring started for the Lady Eagles with their lone run in the first inning.

In the second inning, Gracie Rhodes got the scoring started as she hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run. It was not ruled an inside-the-park home run as it came as the result of an error.

With the 3-0 lead, the Lady Eagles kept scoring as Bella Stiles scored to make it 4-0. Then Avery McNabb scored to make it 5-0. Brinkley Payne then hit a two-RBI single to give them a 7-0 lead. They then made it 8-0 when Olivia Williams hit an RBI single to score Payne.

They went back to work in the bottom of the third to add on five more runs. The first three runs of the inning were courtesy of a three-run home run by Olivia McNabb to make it 11-0. Senior Sky Taylor then scored on a ground ball to make it 12-0.

The Eagles’ 13th run of the game was scored when Williams singled to score Kalli Hagelin.

In the bottom of the fourth, Josey Ware scored the first run of the inning. Olivia McNabb then hit a solo shot for her second homer of the game to make it 15-0, ending the game.

Along with two-home run game, Olivia McNabb combined with Abby Harris to throw a no-hitter. McNabb pitched three innings and Harris pitched one. McNabb had seven strikeouts and Harris threw three.

The Lady Eagles also combined for seven stolen bases as Taylor had three and Olivia McNabb and Payne had two each.

Prior to the game, the Lady Eagles honored senior Olivia McNabb, Taylor and Stiles.

On Thursday, the series headed to Andrews for the final game of the regular season where the Lady Eagles won 10-1.

Once again Olivia McNabb scored the first run of the game on a Payne double for their lone first inning run.

In the second inning, Williams scored on an error to make it 2-0. In the third inning, the Lady Eagles made it 3-0 when Olivia McNabb scored on a Taylor single. For the fourth straight inning, the Lady Eagles had a one-run inning as Brooklyn Hyde scored after stealing home to make it 4-0.

The Lady Wildcats scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Chanteah Rattler scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.

The Lady Eagles got back to scoring in the top of the fifth with two runs. Taylor scored on a Harris single to make it 5-1. Then Harris scored on a Rhodes singles to make it 6-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Lady Eagles had another one-run inning. To make it 7-1, Olivia McNabb scored on a Taylor single. In the top of the seventh, the Lady Eagles capped off the game with a three-run inning.

Harris scored the first run of the inning on a Rhodes single to make it 8-1. Hyde hit a RBI double to make it 9-1. Then to make it 10-1, Hyde stole home.

In their regular season finale, the Lady Eagles put on a base running clinic as they combined for 15 stolen bases. Taylor led the team with four. Hyde and Olivia McNabb had three each and Harris had two. Rhodes, Payne and Williams had one stolen base each.

On the mound, McNabb threw a 118-pitch complete game. She gave up one run on two hits and had three walks. She also struck out 16 of the 26 batters she faced.

For the Lady Wildcats, Alexis Beasley had two stolen bases and Rattler had one. Beasley and Kaiya Ellis also had one hit each. Ratter, Rileigh Lequire and Kylie Donaldson also got on base via a walk.

The Lady Eagles wrapped up the regular season with a 9-7 overall record and went 8-4 in the Smoky Mountain Conference.

The Lady Wildcats went 1-11 overall and in the conference.
