Lady Eagles have uneven week

Hiwassee Dam – With three games in four days, Hiwassee Dam girls basketball coach Avery Cutshaw knew his team would not have as much time to prepare for each opponent and just have to be ready to go.

That worked to start the week on Jan. 24, when the Lady Eagles knocked off Andrews 49-27 to complete the season sweep of their Cherokee County foe. The next day at Copper Basin, Tenn., it didn’t.

Hiwassee Dam came up short in its trip across state lines, 39-34. It was a close game like the team’s matchup on Jan. 8 back at The Nest, which the Lady Eagles won 40-36.

“I was a little disappointed in that one,” Cutshaw said. “I thought it was one we had a really good chance to win, and we just didn’t pull it out. We had some chances late in the game to tie it up and send it into overtime, and we weren’t able to.”

Against the Lady Bulldogs, Hiwassee Dam couldn’t keep up in a 68-45 loss. Still Cutshaw liked his team’s effort against a challenging opponent. The Lady Eagles trailed just 16-12 at the end of the first quarter before Murphy pulled away.

“We played a really good basketball team,” Cutshaw said of Murphy. “One thing I was proud of is … we played a full 32 minutes. I was pleased with that.”

Hiwassee Dam played Nantahala on Tuesday, which took place after this week’s edition of the Cherokee Scout went to press. The Lady Eagles play at Blue Ridge on Friday before traveling to Robbinsville the next day.
