Hiwassee Dam lose to Big Smoky teams Robbinsville, Cherokee
Hiwassee Dam’s varsity volleyball team faced a week of tough opponents where they faced Robbinsville and Cherokee, both on the road.
The Lady Eagles (0-10) hit the road for their fifth and sixth consecutive road games where they traveled to Graham County and Cherokee.
They started their week with a 3-0 loss to Robbinsville (7-2) on Sept. 2. Robbinsville won the first set 25-17, but the first set was the biggest scoring gap of the three sets played.
The Lady Black Knights went on to win both the second and third sets 25-22 to win the match 3-0. The last time they defeated Robbinsville was in their two games in the 2016 season.
On Thursday, the Lady Eagles were back on the road and faced the defending Big Smoky Mountain Conference champions, the Lady Braves (8-6).
Cherokee got an early lead and won the first set 25-3. The Lady Braves then won the second set 25-8 to lead 2-0 in the match.
In the third set, the score was once again 25-8 as Cherokee won the match 3-0. The loss to Cherokee was the Lady Eagles’ ninth straight loss.
The last time the Lady Eagles defeated Cherokee was in the 2019 season when Hiwassee Dam beat them 3-1 in the first match and 3-0 in their second meeting that season.
Last season, both Robbinsville and Cherokee fell to Polk County in the playoffs, defeating Robbinsville in the second round and Cherokee in the final four regional round. Polk County went on to the state 1A championship.

The Lady Eagles will return home at 6 p.m. Thursday for their first Little Smoky Mountain Conference matchup of the season as they face Summit Charter.
At 6 p.m. Monday, they will host Hayesville before hitting the road again for their first conference road game against Blue Ridge Early College in Cashiers at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
