Murphy falls to No. 2-seeded team in 2A volleyball bracket
Greensboro – For the first time since 2022, the Murphy varsity volleyball advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. In the second round of the 2A playoffs, the No. 15-seeded Lady Dogs traveled to Greensboro, where they played No. 2 seed Cornerstone Charter.
To advance to the second round, Murphy defeated No. 18 seeded Elkin at home. The Lady Bulldogs’ match against Elkin was also their first home playoff volleyball game since the 2022 season.
After defeated Elkin in a five-set battle, the Lady Dogs (11-12) advanced to face the Cornerstone Charter Lady Cardinals (26-4) on the road on Oct. 21.
The Lady Cardinals took an early 1-0 win by winning the first set 25-12. They repeated the score in the second set to win it 25-12 to take a 2-0 lead.
In the closest set in the match, the Lady Cardinals closed out the match 3-0 by winning the fourth set 25-15. With their win, Cornerstone Charter advanced to play Cherryville in the third round.
The Lady Bulldogs varsity team ended their season with an 11-12 overall record. Murphy didn’t graduate any seniors, so the team will be back next season with a similar roster. They will also likely have players promoted from the junior varsity squad.
