Hiwassee Eagles sweep Hayesville Yellow Jackets in close basketball game

Hayesville – To start their final week of games in 2025, the Eagles traveled to take on the Yellow Jackets. In their first meeting of the season on Dec. 16, the Eagles swept Hayesville.

The Lady Eagles kicked off their week with a 52-50 win over Hayesville on Dec. 16 for their fourth straight victory. Hiwassee Dam took the lead in the first quarter with 16 points, led by Brinkley Payne with eight points in the opening frame.

The Lady Yellow Jackets fought back in the second quarter to cut into the Eagles’ lead. The Lady Eagles led 24-20 at halftime despite being outscored 11-8 in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, the Lady Yellow Jackets battled to tie the game as they outscored the Lady Eagles 16-12 as they heading into the fourth quarter tied at 36.

With 16 points in the fourth quarter, led by Payne again with eight points, the Lady Eagles outlasted Hayesville to win 52-50.

Hiwassee Dam was led by Payne and Brooklyn Orton who both had 18 points. Abby Harris was also in double digits with 10 points. Harris was also a perfect 2/2 from the free throw line.

Avery McNabb had three points against Hayesville on a first-quarter 3-pointer. Also scoring points were Kinley Stiles with two points and Peyton Williamson with one point.

Boys

The Eagles also kicked off their week with a close win over Hayesville. The Eagles and Yellow Jackets met on the court, and the Eagles got the 53-51 win.

The Jackets took an early lead with 16 points in the first quarter as the Eagles scored nine points. Hiwassee Dam outscored Hayesville to close the gap in the second quarter.

At halftime, Hayesville led 25-23. The Eagles outscored the Jackets again in the third quarter, but Hayesville led 35-34 heading into the final frame.

It was a high-scoring fourth quarter, as both teams battled for the win. With 19 points in the fourth quarter, the Eagles secured the win.

The Eagles were led by Jonah mockery with 25 points against the Jackets. He had a team-leading three 3-pointers and made four free throws in the fourth quarter en route to the win.

Also in double digits was Abel Penland with 11 points. Dalton Kester had nine points, and Jimmy Kelly had eight points.

Up next

When they return from winter break, the Eagles will travel to Robbinsville on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026. They will then travel to Benton, Tenn., on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, to face Polk County for the second time this season. Then they will face Cherokee on the road Friday, Jan. 9, 2026.
