Hiwassee Dam softball Lady Eagles split series with Cherokee Braves

Hiwassee Dam – The Eagles’ varsity softball team got their season off on the right foot with a win in the season opener, but fell on the road against Cherokee.

Both teams won their home games, with the Lady Eagles winning their home opener before falling to the Lady Braves.

 

Eagles win 3-2

The Lady Eagles defeated Cherokee 3-2 on March 10. 

The Lady Braves took an early lead with one run in the top of the first inning. They held that lead until the Lady Eagles grabbed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third.

Cherokee responded with one run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. The Lady Eagles took the lead with one run in the bottom of the fifth and held the 3-2 lead to win their season opener.

The Lady Eagles’ runs were scored by Abby Harris and Josey Ware. Harris had two of their three runs.

Harris also had two stolen bases. Avery McNabb and Peyton Williamson had one stolen base each.

In the pitcher’s circle, Harris threw a 98-pitch complete game. She allowed two runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.

 

Girls fall 11-1

The Lady Eagles went on the road Friday and fell to the Lady Braves 11-1. 

Hiwassee Dam took an early lead with one run in the top of the first inning, but Cherokee answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to go up 3-1.

Cherokee added on three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to lead 6-1.  After a scoreless third inning, Cherokee extended its lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull ahead 10-1.

They then ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with another run.

Harris scored the Lady Eagles’ lone run in the game. As well as Harris getting a hit, Sophie Gibson had two hits. Also getting hits were Gracie Rhodes, Rileigh Harris and Ware, while Rileigh Harris had a stolen base. 

Abby Harris and Gibson split pitching duties in Friday’s game, with Gibson pitching three innings and Harris throwing 1.2.

 

Up next

The Lady Eagles will return to the field at 4:30 p.m. today, when they take on Murphy. They will host Copper Basin, Tenn., at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Hiwassee Dam will travel to Murphy to face the Bulldogs at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The Lady Eagles will then host Andrews at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
