Andrews – The Andrews and Hiwassee Dam varsity girls basketball teams met for the first time this season, and the Lady Eagles got the win in the close game.
In a game that didn’t see either team build a lead of over 10 points, both teams kept pace with the other and the Lady Eagles (2-1) got a slim 60-55 win on Nov. 26.
Knox Davis of Andrews (1-2) opened the game with a three-point shot. There were multiple early lead changes throughout the first quarter, but the Lady Eagles took a 9-7 lead into the second.
Like in the first quarter, Andrews opened with a three-point shot, this time from Demi Davis. The Lady Eagles continued to build on their lead early and led 17-13 when the first timeout was called.
Andrews brought it within one point during the second quarter, but Hiwassee Dam took the lead again. Like how they started the quarter, Andrews ended the quarter on a thee-pointer, this time from Kylie Donaldson.
Hiwassee Dam took a 28-23 lead into halftime, as both teams stayed in step with each other.
Both teams put serious points on the board coming out of the locker room, but the Lady Eagles maintained the lead. Andrews made it a two-point game midway through the third quarter, but the Lady Eagles grew the lead late in the quarter and took a 45-37 lead into the final frame.
Andrews continued to move the ball well around the perimeter. Both teams continued to fight to win late into the game.
The Lady Eagles kept it a multiple-possession game down the stretch to secure a 60-54 win.
Brooklyn Hyde led the Lady Eagles with 21 points. Olivia McNabb had 16 points and Brinkley Payne had 13 points to round out the Lady Eagles in double digits.
For the Lady Wildcats, Donaldson had 28 points and Knox Davis had 12 points. Demi Davis had six points, all coming from three-pointers.
At 6 p.m. Friday, the Lady Eagles will host Summit Charter for their homecoming game. Olivia McNabb, Bella Stiles, Avery McNabb and Sarah Stock are on the homecoming court from the Lady Eagles’ basketball team.
After they take on Summit Charter, Hiwassee Dam will host Hayesville at 6 p.m. Monday before taking on Murphy at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
