Hiwassee Dam – With the win over Summit Charter, the Hiwassee Dam girls varsity basketball team won the Little Smoky Mountain Conference tournament.
They entered the tournament – hosted at Hiwassee Dam – as the No. 1 seed and converted it into the LSMC title.
Girls beat Bobcats
The Lady Eagles defeated Blue Ridge Early College 66-29 on Feb. 17 in the first round. The Bobcats earned their spot in the tournament by defeating Nantahala in the play-in round on Feb. 13.
The Lady Eagles took a huge lead in the first quarter with 33 points while holding the Bobcats to just five points.
Hiwassee Dam extended its lead to 50-13 at halftime. With the large lead, the entire second half was running clock.
The Lady Eagles scored eight points in the third and fourth quarters to win the game 66-29 and advance to the championship game.
Brinkley Payne led the Eagles with 21 points, with 17 of those points coming in the first half.
Brooklyn Orton and Abby Harris had nine points.
Eagles win title
With their 72-38 win over Summit Charter, the Lady Eagles were crowned LSMC champions on Thursday night.
They Lady Eagles got off to a strong start with 25 points in the first quarter and they held Summit to 11 points.
Summit began to close the gap in the second quarter, but the Lady Eagles took a 37-22 lead to halftime.
The game remained close in the third quarter as the Lady Eagles led 45-33, but they pulled away in the fourth quarter.
With 27 points in the fourth quarter while holding Summit to only five points, the Lady Eagles won the game 72-38 and were crowned LSMC champions.
Payne and Harris posted double-doubles in the win. Payne had 27 points and 13 rebounds, while Harris had 26 points and 10 rebounds.
Orton had eight points on the night, while Kinley Stiles had six points.

The Lady Eagles were seeded No. 4 in 1A West in the state playoffs and received a first round bye. In the second round on Thursday, they will host the winner of North Stokes vs. N.C. School of Science and Mathematics from Morganton.
