Eagles start regular season with big wins

Cashiers – The Hiwassee Dam boys and girls basketball teams traveled to take on Summit Charter for their first regular season game and both teams won by more than 30 points.

The Lady Eagles (1-0) kicked off the evening with a 34-point victory over the Lady Bears (0-1) on Friday night.

En route to their 68-34 win, the Lady Eagles came right out of the gate strong by scoring 18 points in the first quarter and only allowing Summit Charter to score five points.

In the second quarter, they kept the ball rolling by adding on 13 more to lead 31-18 at halftime.

Coming out of the half, the Lady Eagles tacked on 24 more points and only allowed the Lady Bears to score seven. Continuing their momentum into the final frame, the Lady Eagles put up 13 points and only allowed nine points against.

The Lady Eagles offense and defense was on full display Friday night. They had multiple steals that led to points and helped maintain their lead. Those steals also led to Summit Charter having three quarters with single digit points.

Two Lady Eagles led the team with 20 points or more. Olivia McNabb had 22 points with 10 points in the first quarter coming on two free throws and four field goals. Brinkley Payne had 20 points Friday night with seven field goals, one three-pointer and she went 3/3 on free throws. Brooklyn Hyde also had double digit points with 15. Hyde had six field goals and one three pointer.

The boys varsity team kept the Hiwassee Dam momentum going with a 41-point win over Summit Charter Friday night.

Like the Lady Eagles did, the boys team came out of the gate on fire. They had their highest scoring quarter in the first with 25 points. They also only allowed the Bears to score seven points.

Jimmy Kelley was on fire in the first quarter with 12 points coming on two three-pointers and three field goals.

The Eagles continued to build on their lead in the second quarter with 21 more points. They took a sizable 46-10 lead into halftime.

Summit Charter had their highest scoring quarter in the third with 14 points. As they attempted to cut into the Eagles’ lead, the Eagles put up 16 points in the third to keep their distance.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles capped off their night with 12 more points and held Summit Charter to their third quarter with single digit scoring to secure the 74-33 win.

The Eagles were led by Aidan Bennett who had 15 points. Freshman Jonah Dockery was just behind him with 13 points. Jimmy Kelley had 13 points Friday night to round out the Eagles in double digit points. Braiden Ledford also had eight points in the game.

They also did not allow any of the Summit charter player to reach 10 points on Friday night.

The Eagles will return home to Hiwassee Dam for their next game Friday against Copper Basin, Tenn. The girls tip-off at 6 p.m. and the boys will start at 7:30 p.m.

They will then hit the road up to Andrews for their first in-county matchup of the season against the Wildcats on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The girls will tip-off at 6 p.m. and the boys will play at 7:30 p.m.
