Hiwassee Dam defeats Copper Basin, falls to Polk County in close games

Hiwassee Dam varsity basketball had a two-game week of non-conference matchups on the road.

The Eagles fell to Polk County, then both teams defeated Copper Basin, Tenn.

Boys varsity

The Eagles started their week by losing a close game to Polk County 64-61 to start their week on Jan. 22 in their first meeting of the season. In their second game of the week, they traveled across state lines to take on Copper Basin, Tenn., coming away with a 57-49 win.

The Eagles took an early 13-9 lead in the first quarter, then extended it with 17 more points in the second quarter. They only allowed Copper Basin single-digit points in the two opening quarters to lead 30-17 at halftime.

Coming out of the half, the Eagles were outscored 20-11 but maintained the lead. They closed to the game with 16 points in the fourth quarter for the win, which snapped an eight-game losing streak dating back to Dec. 16.

Lady Eagles

The Lady Eagles started their week by falling to Polk County 58-49. They took an early lead in the first half, going ahead 28-23 at halftime.

Polk County came out strong in the second half to combine for 35 points to win the game. Olivia McNabb led the team in points with 14, while Abby Harris had 13 points and Brooklyn Hyde had 10.

On Thursday, they took on Copper Basin, Tenn., and came home with the win. The game was close in the first half, but the Lady Eagles exploded in the third quarter to take a 10-point lead. They added 17 more points in the fourth quarter for the win.

Brooklyn Hyde led the team with 23 points. Three more Lady Eagles were in double digits, with Olivia McNabb having 14 points, Harris 11 and Brinkley Payne 10.

Up next

The remainder of the season will be against conference rivals. The Eagles’ next game is at home Friday, when they host Little Smoky Mountain Conference opponents Blue Ridge Early College. The girls start at 6 p.m., while the boys start at 7:30 p.m.

Hiwassee Dam then hosts conference opponent Highlands on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The girls start at 6 p.m., while the boys start at 7:30 p.m.
