Eagles earn big Little Smoky Mountain conference wins

    In a week of conference games, the Hiwassee Dam varsity basketball teams faced Summit Charter and Blue Ridge Early College.
    They faced Summit Charter on Thursday in an important game, especially for the girls. The Eagles then returned home to face Blue Ridge Early College on Friday.

Boys beat Summit
    The Eagles started the week with a big win over Summit Charter, beating the Bears 78-28 on the road.
    They got off to a fast start and dropped 21 points in the first quarter, when Summit Charter had its highest-scoring quarter with 10 points. The Eagles tacked on 27 more points to lead 48-19 at halftime.
    They continued to score in the third quarter while also preventing the Bears from scoring. With 18 points in the third quarter, the Eagles led 66-26 heading into the fourth quarter. By taking a 35-point lead in the third quarter, the remainder of the game was played with a running clock.
    To close out the game, the Eagles added 12 more points in the fourth quarter and held the Bears to just two points. The Eagles snapped a two-game losing streak and picked up their fifth Little Smoky Mountain Conference win of the season.

Girls earn big win
    In the first meeting between the Lady Eagles and Summit Charter, the Lady Bears defeated the Eagles. This time around, the Eagles got the best of Summit Charter, winning 63-53.
    It was a close first half, but a big second half from the Eagles helped them get the win. The Lady Eagles outscored the Bears 15-13 in the opening quarter to take a slim lead heading to the second quarter, extending the lead to 29-23 at halftime.
    With 22 points in the third quarter, the Lady Eagles began to pull away and take full control of the game, leading 51-37. Despite being outscored in the fourth quarter, the Lady Eagles avenged their only conference loss.
    Brinkley Payne led the Lady Eagles with 21 points. Also in double digits were Brooklyn Orton with 17 and Abby Harris with 15.

Boys beat Bobcats
    To remain undefeated in the Little Smoky Mountain Conference, the Eagles defeated Blue Ridge Early College 74-32 on Friday night.
    The Eagles got off to a huge start with 25 points in the opening quarter and holding the Bobcats to only two points. The Eagles scored 18 more points in the second quarter to lead 43-16 at halftime.
    They added 14 more points while holding the Bobcats to nine points to lead 60-25. With the 35-point lead, the fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
    Hiwassee Dam added to its lead with 14 more points in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
    
Girls defeat Bobcats
    It was another big win for the Lady Eagles to close to the week. On Friday, they defeated Blue Ridge Early College 71-41 behind Harris’ 26-point game for another conference win. 
    The Lady Eagles led 12-10 after the first quarter, but then pulled away in the second quarter. They added 24 points in the second quarter to lead 36-22 at halftime.
    The Lady Eagles weren’t done yet as they tacked on 17 more in the third quarter to lead 53-35 heading to the fourth. In the fourth quarter, they outscored the Lady Bobcats 18-6 en route to winning 71-41. 
    Harris led the Lady Eagles with 26 points. Orton had 20 points.

    The Eagles will close out the regular season Thursday night, when they travel to Nantahala. The girls will play at 6 p.m., with the boys playing right after.
