County swimmers break records

    The Cherokee County Aquatic Club competed Thursday in the Mountain Swim League. Two league records were broken at the meet, along with three team records. 
    “The CCAC swimmers had some serious personal best times,” head coach Frank Bachteler said.
    Connor Whitney set two league records in the 13-14 100-meter backstroke and 200m individual medley. Along with his times in the 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle, he qualified in four events for the Junior Olympic meet in late July in Houston, Texas.
    Also achieving Junior Olympic-qualifying times were Elijah Whitney, Lorelei Whitney, Natalie Lawrence, Max Colandrea and Sophia Evans. 
    Elijah Whitney qualified in the 9-10 boys 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke. Lorelei Whitney qualified in the 9-10 girls 50m free, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle. 
    Natalie Lawrence qualified in the 11-12 girls 50m freestyle. Max Colandrea qualified in the 11-12 boys 50m freestyle. Sophia Evans qualified in the girls 15-18 100m freestyle.
    Mountain Swim League All-Star qualifying times were met by Colandrea and Evans. Colandrea qualified in the 11-12 boys 100 individual medley, 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke. Evans qualified in the 15-18 girls 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke.
    Along with breaking records, many swimmers on the team finished in the top five in their events and scored points for the team.
    Estelle Vaughn came in fifth in the 50m freestyle, fourth in the 100m backstroke, third in 100m breaststroke and fifth in the 100m freestyle. Ada Lovelace came in second in 50m freestyle, second in 200m individual medley and third in 100m freestyle. 
    Bryanna Rivera-Jaime came in fifth in the 50m freestyle and second in the 100m breaststroke. Elijah Whitney came in first place in both the 100m individual medley and 50m breaststroke. 
    Natalie Lawrence came in second place in both the 100m individual medley and 50m breaststroke and third place in the 100m freestyle. Sophia Evans came in first in both the 200m individual medley and 50m freestyle. 
    Max Colandrea came in third in the 100m individual medley. Mateo Colandrea came in fourth in the 100m backstroke and third in the 50m freestyle. 
    Opi Whitney came in fourth in the 8 and under 50m freestyle and set a new 6 and under team record. She also got first in the 25m freestyle. Nico Kissel came in second in the 100m butterfly. 
    The 15-18 girls 200m freestyle relay came in second place. The relay team was Bryanna Rivera-Jaime, Jenni Rivera-Jaime, Ada Lovelace and Sophia Evans.
    The CCAC team will compete in upcoming swim meets in Highlands and Franklin before their home meet Tuesday, July 1. New swimmers can join the team until then.
