Cats continue to win

Wildcats like winning, and they have continued to do that as the non-conference schedule comes to a close. The boys varsity basketball team picked up wins over Summit Charter and Highlands last week. The Lady Wildcats also defeated Summit Charter, but fell to Highlands.

Boys varsity

The Wildcats kicked off their week by traveling to Cashiers on Jan. 14 and dropping nearly 100 points on Summit Charter in a 98-27 win.

Andrews started the game with a huge first half. The Wildcats scored 31 points in the first quarter, including 13 points from Ty Clark. The Cats added 31 points in the second quarter to lead 62-18 at halftime.

The Wildcats scored 17 more points in the third quarter, while Summit Charter scored nine points for the third straight quarter. The Cats wrapped it up in the fourth quarter by shutting out Summit Charter and adding 19 more points to cap off a huge win.

Ty Clark led the Wildcats with 25 points, including five 3-pointers. Braxton Rickett also put up big numbers with 21 points, while Gabe Clark had 17, Kegan Ellis had 15 and Eli Aguilar had 12.

Rickett and Ty Clark also had a double-double each, with Rickett getting 11 rebounds and Clark having 10.

On Friday, the Cats concluded their week by defeating Highlands 79-44 at home.

The two teams kept it close in the first half. Andrews took the early lead with 17 points in the first quarter, then followed it up with 19 more in the second to lead 36-27 at halftime.

Coming out of the break it was anyone’s game, and the Wildcats decided to make it theirs. They had their highest-scoring quarter in the third with 24 points, while only allowing Highlands to score nine.

They put the game to bed in the fourth quarter with 19 points, while holding Highlands to just eight more.

Gabe Clark led the team with 25 points, including five 3-pointers. Three other Wildcats were in double digits as Ellis had 19 points, Ty Clark had 13 and Rickett had 12.

Lady Wildcats

The Lady Wildcats also started their week by defeating Summit Charter. With their 63-49 win, they bounced back after losing to Franklin on Jan. 9.

On Friday, the Lady Cats hosted Highlands and lost 42-36 in a close, hard-fought game. The loss to Highlands was their second straight.

Andrews will look to get back in the win column, as Big Smoky Mountain Conference matchups are quickly approaching.

Up next

Andrews will travel to Swain on Friday for their next conference matchup. The girls varsity starts at 6:30 p.m., with the boys start at 8 p.m.

They will then host SMC opponent Cherokee on Tuesday, Jan. 28, with the girls varsity starting at 6:30 p.m. and the boys starting at 8 p.m.

The Wildcats will then host Tuscola for their final non-conference game of the season Wednesday, Jan. 29. The girls varsity starts at 6 p.m., with the boys varsity at 7:30 p.m.
