The Andrews and Murphy varsity wrestling teams competed in the state team duals tournament.
Andrews competed in Robbinsville on Feb. 10, while Murphy headed to East Wilkes on Feb. 11.
Murphy
The Bulldogs headed to East Wilkes to compete in the 2A state team duals. The local wrestlers got a win over Cherryville, then lost to East Wilkes.
In their first dual, the Dogs defeated Cherryville 63-18.
Cherryville opened the dual to two straight wins to take an early lead.
The Dogs then put up big points with James Garrett and Braden Edwards getting wins.
Josiah Niebla, Brayden Gunter and Brody McFaddin got forfeit wins to give the Dogs the lead.
Brodi Haines then got a pinfall win for six more Murphy points. To increase their lead, Anthony Catuto, Branson Crocker, Jonathan Cowan and Kane Gibson got forfeit wins.
Reese Haney lost his match, then Weston Adams got a forfeit win to secure the Dogs’ 63-18 win in the dual to advance in the tournament.
Murphy then faced top-seeded East Wilkes and lost 73-6.
Murphy’s only points came as Catuto got a forfeit win.
East Wilkes 73 points came on 11 pinfall wins, one decision win and one majority decision win.
East Wilkes won the dual 73-6 to advance in the state 2A duals tournament.
Andrews
The Wildcats headed to Robbinsville for the first round of the state 1A team duals tournament. They faced Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy and lost 48-24.
Bonnie Cone opened the dual with four straight forfeit wins. Andrews’ Jonathan Cable picked up a pinfall win for six Wildcat points before Chase Beasley got a forfeit win for six more points.
Ethan Davis of Andrews got a pinfall win for six more points. Bonnie Cone got two more forfeit wins to increase its lead.
Hayden Virtanen got a pinfall win for Andrews’ last six points. The dual ended with Ford Ashe of Andrews falling by pinfall for Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy to win 48-24.
