Bulldogs sweep Eagles in doubleheader

Murphy – After the game was postponed four times due to inclement weather, in-county rivals Murphy and Hiwassee Dam met on the diamond at Konehete Veterans Park for a doubleheader Monday afternoon.

Their first game was originally scheduled for April 22 in Murphy, but rain continued to push the game back. Their matchup scheduled for Friday in Hiwassee Dam was also postponed, leading to Monday’s double header.

Under clean weather conditions, the in-county rivals finally faced off almost a week later than originally scheduled.

In the first game, both teams got the bats going early with one run in the first inning for the game to be tied 1-1 heading into the second inning.

In the top of the second, the Eagles took the lead on a single that drove home Dalton Kester and Isaiah Crisp to make it 3-1.

Murphy closed the gap in the bottom of the second as C Adams scored from third base on a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game.

In the bottom of the third, the Dogs’ bats caught fire and they ran away with the lead. To tie the game, Adam Cook scored on a Peyton Bain single.

To gain the lead, Greyson Hall walked to score Jonah Godsey from third. Zach Hogsed then hit a two-RBI double to give the Dogs a 6-3 lead. Cook then singled to score Greyson Hall to make it 7-3, which is where the score stood at the end of the inning.

The Dogs held the Eagles off the remainder of the game and went on to win the first of two games 7-3.

In the second game, the Dogs got started right where they left off and didn’t stop. Bain singled to drive home Cook to give them an early 1-0 lead.

On a pick off attempt that went from the catcher to second base that was wild led the Dogs scoring another run. On another wild pitch minutes later, the Dogs added on two more runs to lead 4-0.

On a ground ball to the third baseman that was overthrown, the Dogs scored another run to make it 5-0.

By securing a groundout, the Eagles were able to stop the bleeding as the Dogs led 5-0 through the first inning.

The Dogs continued in the second inning with two more runs after an RBI single down the third base line led to the Dogs taking a 7-0 lead.

With the bases loaded in the top of the second, the Eagles were able to fight there way out only giving up two runs.

Murphy had another big offensive inning in the third where they drove home five more runs.

The Dogs went on to cruise to a 16-2 victory for their third straight win.

Murphy will wrap up their regular season at 5 p.m. Thursday at home as they host Hayesville on Senior Night.

Hiwassee Dam is also wrapping up their regular season Thursday at they travel to take on in-county rivals Andrews at 4:30 p.m.

Baseball playoff seeding is Monday, while the first round of the playoffs will be played Tuesday.
