Murphy picks up 2 wins by 40 points-plus in 3-game week

The Murphy boys varsity basketball team stayed busy last week with three games in four days. The Bulldogs kicked it off by defeating Highlands and Blue Ridge Early College before falling to Gilmer County, Ga.

Big win over Highlands

The Dogs took an early lead on Jan. 15 with 15 points in the first quarter thanks to seven points by Abram Twiggs. They followed that up with 16 more in the second quarter.

They took a 31-12 lead to halftime after only allowing the Highlanders to score six points in each quarter.

In the third quarter, the Dogs buried the sword with 23 points out of the half. Cale Harger had nine points in the third quarter to help the Dogs extend their lead. The Dogs played tough defense and shut out the Highlanders in the third quarter.

The Dogs added 11 more points in the final quarter to win the game 65-25.

Harger and Twiggs led the team with 15 points each. Brady Golden was also in double digits with 10 points.

Dogs score 99 points

The Bulldogs defeated Blue Ridge Early College 99-37 on Friday night.

For the second time this season, the Dogs scored 90 or more points in a game. The last time they score 90 was against Nantahala on Jan. 9. The Dogs have had multiple high-scoring performances this season, with Friday’s game being the most they’ve scored this season.

With the win, the Dogs earned their seventh straight victory.

Fall to Georgia opponent

The Dogs’ seven-game win streak came to an end Saturday, when they traveled to Ellijay, Ga., to take on Gilmer County.

The Dogs lost 81-61 to the 3A school. This was their fifth loss of the season and first loss of 2025. Their last loss came to Towns County, Ga., on Dec. 27, 2024, in the Battle of the States tournament.

The Big Smoky Mountain Conference schedule is set to get in full swing for the remainder of the season.

The Dogs will host Hayesville  at 8 p.m. Friday. They will then host Robbinsville on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 8 p.m.
