Bulldogs fall at Uwharrie

Asheboro – Murphy varsity basketball’s season came to an end last week, as both the boys and girls teams traveled to take on Uwharrie Charter.

In the bracket for the state 1A playoffs, both Murphy teams were set to play Uwharrie Charter on Feb. 25 in their first-round matchup.

Boys varsity

The Dogs took on the Uwharrie Charter Eagles in the first round. The Dogs fell 61-46 to see their season come to an end.

They started the game with 15 points in the first quarter, led by Cale Harger with six points. In the second quarter, the Dogs scored on a Conner Golder 3-pointer.

Coming out of halftime, the Dogs scored 12 points in the third quarter. They were led by Tyler Payne and Aaron Harger, who both had five points.

The Dogs closed out the game with 16 points in the fourth quarter. Despite the late push, which included Cale Harger scoring seven points in the fourth quarter, the Dogs came up short.

In their first-round game, the Dogs were led by Cale Harger with 15 points. He was the only Dog in double digits.

The Dogs finished the season with a 14-12 overall record.

Girls varsity

The Lady Dogs took on the Lady Eagles of Uwharrie Charter in the first round and fell 52-49.

The Lady Eagles took the lead early in the close game. They led 11-8 through the first quarter.

The Lady Dogs fought back in the second quarter to outscore the Lady Eagles 12-10. The Lady Dogs trailed 21-20 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Lady Dogs took the lead with 14 points in the third. Murphy took a two-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Eagles fought back and outscored the Lady Dogs 20-15 in the fourth quarter to win. The Lady Dogs wrapped up the season with an 11-17 overall record.

Players from the boys and girls Murphy basketball teams have transitioned to their spring sports with baseball, softball and women’s soccer already having their season openers.
