Rain postpones 2 local Smoky Mountain Conference games

What was supposed to be a five-game week for the varsity boys soccer teams of Cherokee County turned into a three-game week, with each team playing once.

Rain rolled into the mountains of western North Carolina on Thursday and postponed two important games.

Murphy was scheduled to travel to Swain County to face their rivals in a match that was already postponed once this season. The other scheduled match was between in-county teams Andrews and Tri-County Early College.

Murphy

The Bulldogs (7-2-1) were the only Cherokee County team to earn a win last week, as they defeated Blue Ridge Early College (4-4-1) at home on Sept. 24. The win was their fifth in the Smoky Mountain Conference as they remain undefeated against conference opponents.

It was a low-scoring battle between the two teams as Murphy got the 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Elijah Twiggs.

In their next match, they will face Tri-County Early College at 6 p.m. today in their second meeting of the season.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, Murphy will travel to Swain County to face the Maroon Devils. Then at 6 p.m. Monday, the Bulldogs will host the Swain County Maroon Devils.

Andrews

The Wildcats (1-4) played their lone game last week as they hosted Summit Charter. The Bears (3-3) came to the Andrews Valley and defeated the Wildcats 9-1 on Sept. 22.

It was their second match this season where the opponent has scored nine goals after Murphy did so on Sept. 8 in their 9-0 win.

The Wildcats will be back in action today on the road against Hayesville. The match is set to kick off at 4 p.m.

They will then travel to Highlands at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Cats will return home at 6 p.m. Monday to face in-county opponents Tri-County Early College.

Tri-County

The Jaguars (0-6) also had one game last week when they hosted Blue Ridge Early College. They were also in action on Sept. 22, when they fell 3-0 to Blue Ridge.

The Bobcats scored two goals in the first half to jump out to an early lead. The match stayed at 2-0 until about halfway through the second half when Blue Ridge scored again to make it 3-0.

Tri-County will return to the pitch at 6 p.m. today, when they face in-county rivals Murphy. They will then travel to Andrews at 6 p.m. Monday.
