Andrews wrestling falls to Hayesville on the road
Hayesville – Chase Beasley made his season debut against Hayesville and got the win by decision.
The Andrews Wildcats varsity wrestling team headed to Hayesville to take on the Yellow Jacket in a duals match on Dec. 3.
Hayesville took an early 18-0 lead after three forfeits. The forfeit wins came after Andrews did not have a wrestler in the 113-, 120- and 126-pound weight classes.
In the 132-pound weight class, Hayesville extended its lead after Mason Ray defeated Andrews’ Josiah Roehm by fall.
Jameson Dawson of Hayesville defeated Ethan Garrett of Andrews by fall to give Hayesville a 30-0 lead.
Andrews got on the scoreboard in the next match, as Chase Beasley defeated Will Denton of Hayesville by a 14-7 decision to win in Beasley’s season debut.
Hayesville’s Andrews Reynolds defeated Isaac Vaught by pin to give the Yellow Jackets six more points.
Robert Manning of Hayesville pinned Andrews’ Hayden Virtanen for six points. This was Virtanen’s first loss of the season.
In the final match, Rayland Martinez of Hayesville pinned Colton Rose to cap off Hayesville’s 72-3 win over Andrews.
“This is Chase [Beasley’s] debut for this season, so he looks like he’s still wrestling Greco-Roman. That was the last tournament he wrestled at was the Greco state championship,” Andrews head coach Rex Cable said.
To prepare for the next meet, he added, “We just have to get in and get sound in our technique. That’s the biggest thing is just drill, drill, drill and constantly strive to improve. Then we’ll work on the conditioning for January. When January comes around, we have to have the technique down and been shape.”
The Wildcats varsity wrestling team will head to Swain County for the Devil Duals meet between all Smoky Mountain Conference wrestling teams Saturday.
Andrews Middle gets pins
Andrews Middle School’s wrestling team faced Hayesville’s middle school squad on Dec. 3. Hayesville got a win 42-29 despite Andrews getting two wins via pin and one by technical fall.
Isaiah Roehm of Andrews opened the dual with a technical fall win over Hunter Hill of Hayesville to earn the Wildcats five points. A technical fall is when one wrestler earns 15 more points than their opponent.
Mack Wallace of Andrews got the pinfall victory over Ryan Hadley of Hayesville to earn the Wildcats six points.
Zayden Wallace got the pin against Hayesville’s Anna Gribble to earn the Wildcats six more points.
Sissy Ashe of Andrews then fell by pin to Brett Hannah of Hayesville to ear the Yellow Jackets six points.
Hayesville earned six points for forfeit wins in the 90-, 98-, 113-, 132-, 144- and 190-pound weight classes.
Other than their wins by pin, Andrews earned points for forfeit wins in the 106- and 120-pound weight classes.
Cable said the middle school team wrestled well.
“They showed a lot of improvement. Zayden [Wallace] is really coming along,” Cable said. “He’s really grown to the sport, so I expect big things out of him the future.”
On Thursday, the Andrews Middle School team will head to Swain County for the SMC Duals, then on Friday the Wildcats will host Robbinsville in a dual match.
