Andrews golf in 1st, Murphy in 3rd at Mountain Harbour
Hayesville – Brady Queen and Logan Shuler of Andrews separated themselves from the field to come in first and second place, respectively, in the Andrews golf team’s season debut.
Queen and Shuler were two of four golfers to shoot a nine-hole score of less than 50 as they topped the leaderboard.
Smoky Mountain Conference golfers from Andrews, Murphy, Hayesville and Highlands took on Mountain Harbour Golf Club on Thursday afternoon.
Andrews shot a team score of 194 to earn the win. The Wildcats were led by event winner Queen, who shot 42, while Shuler had a round of 43 to come in second place.
Brady McLelland shot 54 to finish tied for sixth place. Tucker Stalcup shot 55 and Braylen Maennle shot 60 to finish tied for 12th and 18th overall, respectively.
Highlands came in second place with a team score of 198. The Highlanders were led by Sam Conner and Chase Kenter, who each shot 45 to finish in a tie for third place.
Murphy came in third place overall with a team score of 217 in the team’s second event of the season.
The Bulldogs were led by Brady Grant, Elijah Kerley and Abram Twiggs who all had nine-hole rounds of 54. Their round of 54 landed them in a tie for sixth place overall.
Brody Orton shot 55 to finish tied for 12th, while Easton Manuel shot 57 to finish in solo 15th.
The Dogs showed improvement Thursday as they went four strokes lower than in their previous event, which was also at Mountain Harbour on March 10. Kerley, Twiggs and Manuel had lower rounds than during their previous trip to Hayesville.
The Yellow Jackets came in fourth place after shooting a team score of 221. They were led by Ephraim Jones, who had a round of 50 to finish fifth.
Teams return to the course Tuesday, where Tri-County Early College is hosting Andrews, Hayesville and Rosman. Murphy will take on Cherokee, Robbinsville, Blue Ridge Early College and Swain County.
