Andrews Wildcats baseball gets first win of season, softball falls

The Andrews baseball team is officially in the win column with their win over Robbinsville last week. The Wildcats split the series and got their first win of the season.

The Andrews softball team also faced Robbinsville, losing both games.

Baseball

In the first of two games against Robbinsville, Andrews defeated the Black Knights 11-9 on March 18.

Robbinsville got on the board first and build a three-run lead through the top of the second inning.

Andrews then scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead. Robbinsville fought back in the top of the third to trail 5-4.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Andrews extended its lead with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Robbinsville rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth, but Andrews shut them down to win.

Kelby Waldroup, Logan Shuler and Dawson Stalcup had two runs each in the win. Kegan Ellis, Eli Aguilar, Drew Dartez and Ethan Sutton had one run each.

Pitching duties were split between Garrett, Stalcup and Logan Hyde. Garrett pitched 1.2 perfect innings with two strikeouts.

In their second matchup with Robbinsville on Friday, the Wildcats fell after Robbinsville made a late rally to win the game.

Andrews held Robbinsville scoreless for the first five innings of the game, while the Wildcats scored five runs to lead 5-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when Robbinsville got on the board.

Andrews added one more run to lead 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. However, with the game on the line, Robbinsville scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 7-6.

In Friday’s loss, Dartez scored two runs. Waldroup, Shuler, Sutton and Hyde scored one run each.

Waldroup, Sutton and Braxton Rickett split pitching duties Friday. Sutton struck out 13 batters in five innings.

At 4:30 p.m. Friday, the Wildcats will host Cherokee in their next game. At 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Andrews will host Swain County.

Softball

The Lady Wildcats had a home-and-home series against a tough Robbinsville team. In the first game on March 18, Andrews fell 14-3 in a seven-inning game.

Robbinsville got on the board early to build a 6-0 lead through the first two innings. They added two more in the top of the fourth before Andrews got on the board to make it 8-1.

After a scoreless fifth inning, both teams scored two runs each in the sixth inning for Robbinsville to lead 10-3 heading into the final frame.

Robbinsville scored four more runs in the top of the seventh. The Lady Cats couldn’t make a late rally and fell 14-3.

The Lady Cats’ three runs were scored by Chanteah Rattler, Katie Moses and Lauren Cochran. Cochran had two stolen bases, while Moses and Rattler had one stolen base each.

On Friday, they wrapped up their week by traveling to Robbinsville to take on the Lady Black Knights. Robbinsville won 15-0 in three innings.

Robbinsville heated up early with five runs in the first innings and six more in the second. They ended the game with four runs in the third inning.

At 4:30 p.m. Friday, the Lady Cats will host Cherokee. At 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Andrews will host Swain County.
