Andrews splits with Hayesville

Andrews – In their second meeting of the season, the Andrews boys basketball team defeated Hayesville, while the girls varsity team fell to the Yellow Jackets.

Friday night’s result was the same as their first meeting last month, but this time there was no overtime needed for the boys game.

Boys varsity

En route to a 49-42 win, both Gabe Clark and Ty Clark dropped 15 points against the Yellow Jackets on Friday night.

It was a close game from the start, as the Wildcats scored 17 points in the first quarter with the help of six points from Gabe Clark in the first quarter. The Cats took a three-point lead into the second quarter, which they maintained to lead 27-23 at halftime.

The Jackets came out of halftime and outscored the Cats 10-7, but the Cats still led heading into the fourth quarter. Both teams fought to the finish before the Wildcats got the win.

The Wildcats were led by the Clark brothers as well as Kegan Ellis, who had nine points – five coming in the fourth quarter.

Girls varsity

The Lady Cats fell to Hayesville 46-34 Friday night for their second loss to the Lady Yellow Jackets this season.

The Lady Jackets took a seven-point lead in the first quarter, then followed it up with nine more points in the second quarter. The Lady Cats went to halftime trailing 26-18.

Coming out of halftime, the Lady Cats outscored Hayesville 9-6 in the third quarter, but still trailed heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Jackets exploded for 14 points in the fourth quarter for the win.

Drea Cutshaw had 11 points to lead the team Friday night, with Kylie Donaldson scoring nine.

Up next

The Wildcats will head to Murphy to take on their in-county rivals Thursday. Their second meeting of the season will start at 6:30 p.m., when the girls start, with the boys following at 8 p.m.

They will then head to Hayesville next week for the Big Smoky tournament where they will go head-to-head with other SMC teams to try and walk away with the conference crown. At press time, the boys are 5-3 in the SMC and the girls are 4-4 entering the final week of the regular season.
