Indoor track teams head to Smoky Mountain Conference championship at Swain

Bryson City – Teams from the Smoky Mountain Conference headed to Swain County High School for the conference championship meet.

Andrews and Murphy high schools were among the teams who competed in the SMC championship meet on Jan. 29.

The Wildcats had two runners get top-three finishes on Wednesday. Isaac Patrick came in third in the 55-meter dash and Aj Johnson came in third in the long jump.

Johnson also got eighth in the 55m dash. In the shot put event, Logan Patrick came in fourth, William Wood came in fifth and Braydon Bohanon came in eighth.

Murphy also sent multiple athletes to compete in the track and field events at the SMC Championship. The Dogs made their season debut at the meet.

Corrine Cotton came in first place in the 500m dash. Cotton also came in third in the 55m dash. Rylee Tabor came in fourth in the 300m dash and seventh in the 55m dash. Halie Hill came in fifth in the 300m dash and sixth in the 55m dash. In shot put, Lexi Wajda came in 10th.

For the boys athletes, Brady Grant came in second in the 300m dash. Kamdyn Koop was just behind him in third in the 300m dash event. In the 55m dash, Cameron Clem came in fifth, Blake David came in seventh and Koop came in ninth.

Brody Orton excelled in the field events coming in second in triple jump and third in shot put. Charlie Graves came in seventh in the shot put.

The boys relay team from Murphy came in second place in the 4x200m relay.

Along with Andrews and Murphy, Cherokee, Robbinsville and Swain County also competed in the SMC Championship meet.

Andrews will head back to Swain County today to compete in the Last Chance Polar meet. The meet will serve as a last chance for athletes to qualify for the upcoming state championship meet.

Scheduled to compete alongside Andrews with a shot at qualifying for the state meet are Asheville School, Avery County, Cherokee, Enka, Franklin, Pisgah, Robbinsville and Smoky Mountain.
