Andrews, Murphy compete in duals

Robbinsville – The Murphy and Andrews varsity wrestling teams headed to Robbinsville for the Smoky Mountain Conference Duals on Thursday.

At the event, Murphy came out with wins over Andrews and Cherokee, while Andrews went winless.

In the Bulldogs vs. Wildcats matchup, the Dogs won 48-11. Murphy wrestlers who scored six points by pin were Trenton Cook, Reese Haney and Braden Edwards. Wrestlers who scored six points by forfeit wins were Brody McFaddin, Anthony Catuto, Branson Crocker, Jake Miller and Josiah Niebla.

Scoring points for the Wildcats were Josiah Roehm, who got a 18-0 technical fall win over Murphy’s Daniel Chastain. Hayden Virtanen of Andrews also scored six points for the Wildcats by forfeit win.

Bulldogs

Murphy’s other win came as they defeated Cherokee 39-30. Earning six points for the Dogs by pinfall were McFaddin and Miller.

Crocker, Niebla, Chastain and Evan Wilson earned six points for forfeit wins. Catuto earned three points after a 7-1 decision win.

In their other duals, the Dogs fell to Swain County 36-34, Hayesville 48-36 and Robbinsville 68-3.

Against Swain, Niebla, Cook and McFaddin scored six points for the Dogs by pinfall wins. Catuto scored four points for his majority decision win. Crocker and Reese Haney scored six points for forfeit wins.

Against Hayesville, Cook, McFaddin, Catuto and Niebla earned six points for their wins by pinfall. Chastain and Miller got six points for forfeits.

Against Robbinsville, Catuto earned three points for a 5-4 decision win.

Wildcats

In their five duals, Andrews lost all five. They fell to Cherokee 54-12, Hayesville 66-12, Murphy 48-11, Robbinsville 73-0 and Swain 60-10.

In the dual against Cherokee, Roehm and Chase Beasley scored six points by forfeit win. In the dual against Hayesville, Virtanen got six points for his pinfall win, while Beasley got six points for a forfeit.

Then in their dual against Swain, Beasley scored four points for his majority decision win. Ford Ashe got six points for the Wildcats in a forfeit.

Up next

The next event for the Bulldogs is their event at home at 5 p.m. Friday, when Murphy will play host to Franklin and Hayesville in the Battle for the Belt.

Both Murphy and Andrews will head to Robbinsville on Saturday for the James Orr Invitational, where both boys and girls wrestlers will compete.

Murphy will have Senior Night during their home event against Rosman on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The conference tournament will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, at Andrews High School and will be an all day event.
