Highlands – Seven seniors in the Cherokee Scout’s coverage area have been selected for this year’s West-Midwest All-Star game, which will take place at Highlands High School on Saturday.
Andrews’ Emily Mealer, Murphy’s Calista Adams and Amber Martin, and Nantahala’s Breanna Passmore will play in the girls game. Hiwassee Dam’s Sam Bradford and Kolby Stiles, and Murphy’s Hunter Laney will play in the boys game.
The girls game will take place at 5 p.m., while the boys game will take place at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $7.
The first West-Midwest All-Star game took place in 2015, and it will return this year after not being played in the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Former Cherryville basketball coach Bud Black came up with the idea as a way to have a senior All-Star game for players in western North Carolina. This year’s game features athletes from the Smoky Mountain Conference, Southern Piedmont Conference and Western Highlands Conference.
Both West teams will practice from 11 a.m. to noon the day of the game, while the Midwest teams will practice from noon-1 p.m. A banquet will follow at 2 p.m., with parents, friends and others attending being charged $7 for a meal. All proceeds will be used for scholarships. Then both games will be played that night.
