50 years since 14-0
Friday is the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Murphy High School varsity football team’s undefeated state 2A championship winning season.
The team was led by longtime Bulldogs head coach Terry Postell. Players on the 1974 state championship winning team include seniors Noland Smith, Kenneth Hyatt, Dwight Bennett, Kenny Hall, Willie Brown, Phil Dickey, Tim Myers, Chris McConnell and Joey Palmer.
Other players include Lee Lackey, David Murphy, Bill Owen, Johnny Queen, Marty Douglas, Carl Stiles, Jeff Plemmons, Danny Gee, Carl Auvil, Bill Gomes, Brian Clayton, Tony Dickey, Allen Blakemore, Bruce Hogsed, Steve Brooks, David Hubbard, Dan Hughes and Jimmy Farmer.
Honor also goes to those who helped the team but were unable to play during the 1974 season.
ANDREWS
Game on Blue Stage
Warriors Veteran Outreach and The Blue Stage, 889 Main St., are presenting the annual Army-Navy football game on Saturday, Dec. 14, as a “House Divided” watch party.
Mark Ware, director of Warriors Veteran Outreach and also outreach program specialist with N.C. Works Veterans Services, is glad to announce the hosting partnership so local veterans and football fans can come together to watch the historic and long-celebrated rivalry, which typically signals the end of the NCAA football regular season.
The game will be televised on the big screen kicking off at 3 p.m. Doors for the watch party open at 1 p.m. Dec. 14.
Papa Kash’s food truck will be on site. Tickets are suggested with cash donations or gifts for Toys for Tots.

NANTAHALA
Hawks get third win
Nantahala got its third win of the season when the Hawks defeated Eastgate Life Academy of Hiawassee, Ga., 90-85 to get back in the win column after falling to Copper Basin, Tenn., on Nov. 19.
The Hawks improve to 3-1 on the season and sit atop the Little Smoky Mountain Conference.
At 6 p.m. Thursday, Nantahala will host Robbinsville, then at 6 p.m. Friday will play host to Polk County, Tenn. At 7 p.m. Monday, the Hawks come to Cherokee County to take on Andrews.
PEACHTREE
ACWF back in the ring
On Saturday, Dec. 14, the American Championship Wrestling Federation will be back in action at the Peachtree Community Center, 125 Memory Lane.
ACWF superstars in action will include the Men of Honor (Frodo, Stryker and Mountain Man Jeremy Stiles), the American Outlaws (Axel Gunn and Killshot), Flex Ferguson, Digger James, Robert Starr, The Freak, MD King, Billy Havoc, Mr. Atlanta 2, Mike Clay and Rodney Haze.
Also featured will be The Jesus Freak and Royce Steel. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m.
Details: Tickets at the door are $7 for adults, $6 for ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and under.
FRANKLIN
Swim meet season starts
The swim season has officially kicked off in Cherokee County.
Swimmers from Tri-County Early College competed in their first swim meet.
The first meet was held in Franklin.
At the first meet they took on Franklin and Smoky Mountain.
TCEC was the runner-up to a large Franklin team.
From TCEC, the team of Mary Lynn Hulsey, Sophia Evans, Tori Jimenez and Tina Trigueros finished in second place in the 200-meter medley relay and 200m freestyle relay.
Evans finished in first place in the 200m freestyle and in second place in the 100m freestyle.
Hulsey finished in third in the 50m freestyle and fourth in the 100m backstroke. Jiminez finished in fifth in the 200m individual medley and second in the 500m freestyle.
On the boy’s side, the team of Nathan Abejam, Elias Diaz-Menchu, Griffin Criteau-Schreiner and Nathan Downs came in third place in the 200m medley relay.
Abejam came in third in the 200m IM and third in the 100m backstroke. Criteau-Schreiner came in third in the 100m butterfly and Diaz-Menchu came in fourth in the 100m backstroke.
The team swam a second meet in Franklin and the results can be found here next week.
