RUTHERFORTON – Andrews and Nantahala boys varsity golfers took on the par-73 Meadowbrook Golf Club in the 1A West Regional round.
Local golfers hits the course on May 5 in hopes of qualifying for the state championship.
Andrews
With a team score of 355, the Wildcats finished in second place as a team and qualified for the 1A state championship.
Brady Queen finished in a tie for third place with a round of 83. He shot 41 on the front nine and 42 on the second nine for a 10-over par round, finishing four shots behind first place.
Tucker Stalcup finished in solo ninth place after he shot 88. He shot 43 on the front nine and 45 on the second nine for his 15-over par round.
Senior Logan Shuler shot 89 to finish in a tie for 10th place. Shuler shot 46 on the front nine and then 43 on the back nine.
Brady McLelland finished in solo 17th place after his round of 95. He shot 49 on the front nine and then 46 on the second nine. He drained a tricky putt on the 18th green to secure the Wildcats’ spot in the 1A state championship.
Sophomore Braylen Maennle fnished in a tie for 28th after a round of 102. He shot 51 on both the front and back nine.
Queen, Shuler and McLelland immediately went from the golf course to the baseball diamond for the first round of the 1A state baseball playoffs. All three were instrumental in securing the golf team’s spot in the state championship, then helping the baseball team advance to the second round.
Nantahala
Five Nantahala Hawks also qualified for the regional round. As a team, the Hawks golfers shot 410 to finish in sixth place.
Leading the Hawks was Landon Neal, who shot 96 to finish in solo 18th place. Neal shot 45 on the front nine and 51 on the back nine.
Fernando Trejo finished in a tie for 23rd after shooting 99. He shot 49 on the front nine and 50 on the back nine.
Kayleb Worley finished in solo 30th place after a round of 103. Worley shot 51 on the front nine and 52 on the back nine.
Rory Blackwell shot 112 to finish in solo 38th place. He shot 59 on the front nine and 53 on the back nine.
Senior Cole McCoy finished in a tie for 39th after a round of 114. He shot 55 on the front nine and 59 on the back nine.
Regional champs
Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy won the 1A West Regional championship after shooting 333 as a team.
Individual champion Jace McDonald, a senior at Thomas Jefferson, shot 6-over par 79 to win the event by three stokes.

The 1A boys golf state championship took place after the Cherokee Scout’s press time Tuesday. The results will be in the May 20 edition.
