Andrews – Josh Schwarting will take on the role as athletic director at Andrews High School. He has been hard at work since accepting the position in order to set up a successful 2025-26 sports year for the Wildcats.
During an interview with the Cherokee Scout, Schwarting, who is from central Virginia, said being an educator is a second career for him. He began in commercial insurance with State Farm Insurance, then moved into mission work, where he spent time in Honduras. He then began teaching computer science and engineering at Andrews High.
Prior to beginning his career as a teacher, Schwarting previously came to the area to bring people to Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters starting in 2007. He grew up in a small town and was drawn to continue small-town living in Andrews.
Schwarting said one of his main goals as athletic director is to build community involvement and a sense of togetherness, while building pride in Andrews athletics. He also wants to equip members of the coaching staffs to be the best they can be.
In taking over as athletic director, Schwarting said he won’t make any big changes, but instead will focus on areas that need the most help within the athletic department. He has already spent time talking with coaches and staff members.
In short order, Schwarting said he has learned just how massive the job is. The role of athletic director is an administrative position, and the people who do this job care about the student-athletes.
He added that he plans to use the network of other coaches and athletic directors in the region as a support system.
Schwarting said he is looking forward to many things in his new role as athletic director, including supporting the coaches and student-athletes.
“I want them to shine,” he said when talking about putting coaches in the best position to succeed.
Along with the coaches finding success, he wants the same thing for student-athletes at Andrews High.
He took over as athletic director after Frank Maennle retired from the position on May 22.
