Andrews senior Isaac Weaver and Murphy junior Hunter Stalcup were both selected to the 2022 N.C. Sports Writers All-State Team, which was voted on by 10 writers who cover high school sports across the state.
The list was put together by NCPreps, which is the Rivals site for all things North Carolina sports.
Weaver was on the first team as an athlete, while Stalcup was listed as an honorable mention at linebacker. Draughn senior Luke Rector was the only other 1A player on the first team, slotting in as an offensive lineman. Other honorable mention selections from 1A included Mount Airy junior Tyler Mason at running back and Robbinsville junior Cuttler Adams at defensive back.
Weaver helped lead Andrews to its best season in decades, as the Wildcats finished 13-1, won their first Smoky Mountain Conference Championship since 1983 and advanced to the Elite Eight of the state playoffs for the first time since 2011. He finished the year with 1,494 rushing yards, 394 receiving yards on offense, 11 interceptions on defense and 34 total touchdowns. He was named SMC Back of the Year and was an All-Conference selection for the second straight season.
Stalcup recorded 79 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery on defense, but made an even bigger impact on the offensive side of the ball. With the Bulldogs’ running back depth limited because of injuries, he carried the load for much of the season. He finished the year with 2,204 rushing yards, 316 receiving yards, 249 return yards and 31 touchdowns on his way to being named All-Conference.
