Free sports physicals
The Cherokee County Health Department will be offering free sports physicals for student-athletes in Cherokee County.
From 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, pre-k through 12th grade students can get their free sports physical.
You can call ahead to schedule an appointment, while walk-ins are also welcome.
The Cherokee County Health Department is located at 228 Hilton Street in Murphy. To contact the health department, call 828-837-7486.
ATHLETICS
Teams back on the field
Today marks the official start of the 2026-27 athletic year. Fall sports kick off practice today.
Football, volleyball, cross-county, men’s soccer and women’s golf will begin its first official practice of the year.
The first regular season game can be held on Monday, Aug. 10. The first scrimmage for football can be played on Friday, Aug. 7.
Andrews will be the first to play a game as they scrimmage Copper Basin, Tenn., on the road.
All three varsity volleyball teams will be in action on Tuesday, Aug. 11 to kick off the regular season.
On Aug. 11, Andrews will host Summit Charter and Hiwassee Dam will host Swain County. Murphy will be on the road facing Rosman.
WRESTLING
ACWF back in Peachtree
The American Championship Wrestling Federation returns to the Peachtree Community Center on Saturday night for its next show.
Following the Summer Showdown held on July 11, Saturday night’s event is Summer Reckoning.
Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $9 for adults, $7 for kids 6-12 and free for kids 5 and under.
The Peachtree Community Center is located at 125 Memory Lane.
FISHING
Bass benefit tournament
There will be a bass fishing tournament to benefit Bobby Stalcup on Friday, Aug. 7.
The tournament will begin at 7 p.m. and conclude at 1 a.m. the next day at the Ledford Chapel boat ramp at Lake Chatuge.
The entry fee is $60 per boat and there will be awards for the top three finishers.
The event is sponsored by the Tri-County Bass Club.
GOLF
Cats host golf event
The Andrews High School booster club will be hosting a golf tournament fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 8.
The tournament will be at Chatuge Shores in Hayesville. Registration starts at 8:15 a.m. with golf starting at 9 a.m.
The format is a four person scramble. The entry fee is $100 per person.

Martins Creek golf event
Martins Creek Elementary School is hosting a fundraising golf tournament.
The tournament will be held at Old Union in Blairsville, Ga., on Saturday, Aug. 29. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
The format is a two-man scramble with an entry fee of $100 per person.
